Nominal Diameter of Rivet:
It is the diameter of the unheated rivet.
Gross Diameter of the Rivet:
It is nothing but the diameter of the rivet hole itself.
Gross Area of Rivet:
It is the area calculated based on the gross diameter of the rivet.
Pitch of the Rivets (v):
It is the distance between centres of two adjacent rivets in a row. It is measured parallel to the direction of force.
Gauge Distance or Gauge (g):
It is the distance between two adjacent rows of rivets measure perpendicular to the direction of force.
Gauge Line:
It is the line of rivets which is parallel to the direction of force.
Edge Distance:
It is the distance of the edge of the member or the cover plates from the centre of extreme rivet hole.
Lap: It is the distance normal to the joint measured between the edges of the cover lapping plates in a lap joint or between the joint and the end of cover plates in a butt joint.
Note:
It may be noted that there is a little confusion among the available literature with respect to the definition of the terms “pitch” and “gauge distance”. To avoid confusion, the following definitions may be kept in mind.
Pitch may be defined as the distance between the centre to centre of rivets measured along the longer direction of the joint whereas “gauge distance” may be defined as the distance between the centre to centre of rivets measured along the shorter direction of the joint.
